LocalRef: Refugees welcome? The local integration of refugees seen through multilevel lenses. A comparison between Barcelona and Madrid - (Project's Principal investigator) (January 2020 - June 2021)
This project’s objective is to understand the role of cities in the integration of refugees from a multi-level perspective. More specifically, we are interested in the first stages of this integration process. This is, those related to the reception of refugees in cities. To do so, we treat the refugee integration as an intractable policy controversy that affects the way cities position around this issue. This project intends to answer two questions from a comparative perspective: (1) from which position do cities develop political and policy agendas around the issue of refugee integration? and (2) how do these agendas translate into multi-level governance arrangements? The questions are empirically answered by looking at the 2015 European Refugee Crisis and the political and policy responses offered by Barcelona and Madrid around this issue. |

TransCrisis: Enhancing the EU's transboundary crisis management capacities (Horizon 2020- Ref. 649484) (April 2015-March 2018)
TransCrisis is a three-year project on transboundary crisis management in Europe led by the London School of Economics (LSE). The Barcelona Institute of International Studies (IBEI) is a partner in TransCrisis. As part of this project, the IBEI research team studies the role of EU agencies in managing transboundary crises in Europe. My contribution is related to the Work Package 4.3. on the role of European Union agencies (EU agencies) in the management of transboundary crises (e.g. the financial crisis, the refugee crisis). The contribution is divided into (1) a quantitative part based on the biographical database of EU agencies' management board members and a survey on the perception on crisis and (2) a qualitative study of three cases of transboundary crisis and the role of the agencies. |
